Carrollton: A City with Something for Everyone
Carrollton: A City with Something for Everyone
Carrollton’s thriving Historic Downtown has seen a range of upgrades in the last three years. From a revitalized town square with a new grassy park area outlined by a sleek boardwalk, to bistro style chairs surrounded by bubbling fountains, the scene is both charming and exciting. Vibes from the surrounding eclectic restaurants make it so that you could spend the whole day in Downtown Carrollton whilst not missing a single experience. Need some novelty candy, a gift for that special someone, or perhaps a rock climbing trek on the nation’s largest indoor climbing wall? Carrollton has that and so much more.
Downtown Carrollton’s Concert on the Square Series aims to please as it presents a season full of song this spring. If you can’t make it out to the 3rd Annual TEXFest event, a free Texas Independence Day Celebration with music, food, 13 local craft breweries, and wine from a local vineyard on Saturday, March 3 from 3-9 p.m., then make sure to stop in for some Texas Country from Justin Philip Brooks on Saturday, March 24 and some good ol’ rock n’ roll courtesy of Ashmore on Saturday, April 14.
The concert series spans the listening spectrum while providing outdoor music, food, and fun. The best part? It’s all free. The city provides free, family entertainment all year long to strengthen ties with residents and visitors while building a sense of community that can be felt in waves throughout the DFW Metroplex.
The Concert on the Square Series continues throughout the summer and into the fall, but we save the biggest and best for last. The city’s award-winning Festival at the Switchyard is an annual celebration of Carrollton’s residents, history, and relationship with travel by rail. The day-long festival takes place Saturday, Nov. 3 and features all-day concerts, games and rides, a zipline, bungee trampolines, craft and food vendors, two bars, face painting, balloon artists, caricaturists, arts and crafts, lawn games, and national headliners to wrap up a fun night after an exciting day. Past Festival performances have showcased Third Eye Blind, Blues Traveler, Gin Blossoms, 3 Doors Down, Fastball, Barenaked Ladies, Everclear, and local Texas favorite The Toadies. Stay tuned for the 2018 headliner announcement at carrolltonfestival.com.
Downtown also features fabulous boutiques with the most current trends in clothing and jewelry fashions, gifts, and specialty candy. Put a wine bar and spa treatment combo together to melt your troubles away with relaxing packages on any budget. Stop in at the antique mall to find a long lost treasure or that one item to complete your collection.
The restaurants in Downtown Carrollton can satisfy even the pickiest of palates. Babe’s Chicken Dinner House fills the afternoon air with savory smells of the restaurant’s staple offering: fried chicken and biscuits. Stop in at Sid’s Rainbow Grill for a chicken fried steak sandwich and top it off with a malt or a shake in your favorite flavor. In the mood for Italian? Is it date night or lunchtime? It doesn’t matter because Cane Rosso, with an appetizing assortment of Neapolitan pizzas, and Amici Signature Italian, featuring earthy, fresh takes on traditional dishes, both offer guests a modern and unique twist on some of your all-time favorite fare.
Craving a burger and a beer? Twisted Root Burger Co. has you covered, and make sure to try out some spicy pickles while you’re there. If noodles are more your style, stop in at Monkey Kind Noodle Co. Made from scratch, hand-pulled noodles, fresh dumplings, and an entire spice spectrum will leave you wondering how you’ve never had this quality Chinese food before. Or maybe you have and you’re back for more!
If you’re only interested in sipping, pay a visit to the quaint 55° Wine Bar for some pinot or drop in to local fave C2 Café for a medium roast and one of the best views of the Square.
Don’t forget the desserts. Downtown Carrollton has a soft spot for those with a sweet tooth. From Beth Marie’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream and Cuban Dulceria International Bakery, to Cow Tipping Creamery, there is no shortage of sweets. After visitors grab some novelty sweets at Bloom’s Candy & Soda Pop Shop, they can take a stroll to adjacent Pioneer Park for a gander at the public art featuring a mural by a local artist and matching flower statues.
If the food brought you to Downtown, the shows will make you stay. Enjoy year-round, free entertainment with Downtown’s Movie on the Square Series which includes the May the 4th Be With You Star Wars-themed event on, you guessed it, Friday, May 4 at 6 p.m. Kid-friendly movies will kick up some fun with 2016’s animated hit Sing on Saturday, April 21 as well as the third installment of everyone’s favorite villain-turned-good guy, Gru, in Despicable Me 3 on Saturday, May 26.
For the pet lovers out there, don’t hesitate to bring Fido along because there’s plenty for him to enjoy as well. In addition to all outdoor concerts and movies, all doggos are invited to the 3rd Annual Paws on the Square event to be held on Saturday, April 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free, community pet event brings together animal welfare organizations, pet-themed vendor and health booths, a caricature artist, and a slew of PAWesome photo opps. The event also features fun playtime activities for the pups such as an obstacle course, doggy massages, and “doga” (dog yoga).
If your travel plans bring you back to DFW during the summer or fall, keep Carrollton in mind and schedule a visit to Downtown where you can Eat. Play. Shop. Repeat.
