Where The Locals Explore: State Thomas
So you want to explore Dallas like a local? We’re here to help by introducing you to the best local eateries, entertainment venues, coffee shops, and dives. Let us take you through the best of Dallas - neighborhood by neighborhood.
When you think of Dallas neighborhoods, Uptown, Oak Lawn, Bishop Arts District, & Lower Greenville immediately come to mind. One area you may not have explored yet is the charming State Thomas neighborhood nestled alongside Uptown. This quaint, tree-lined locale feels like it was brought straight from Europe to our doorstep. Streetside cafes, neighborhood coffee shops, unique bars and restaurants lend a warm, inviting feel to this walkable area. Whether you’re searching for a night out, a scenic walk, or a coffee shop to work from, State Thomas has an option for you.
At the corner of State & Allen Streets (go figure) you’ll find this neighborhood staple. Featuring a full menu, bar, and the all-important brunch offering, State & Allen is always bustling with activity. Sit on the shaded, outdoor patio and enjoy a craft cocktail and take in the beautiful, tree-lined boulevards of State Thomas.
Just a few steps down the way from State & Allen you’ll find one of Dallas’s most acclaimed bars. Modeled after the Parisian sidewalk cafes of the 1900s and offering hundreds of cocktails, one thing is certain - anything you order at Parliament will be crafted with skill. Watch the time and effort your bartender spends meticulously designing your drink and you’ll understand why this isn’t your typical neighborhood bar.
Right next door to State & Allen sits State Street Coffee - a beautiful coffee nook with cozy seating and fresh, aromatic brews. If you need to stop on your neighborhood walk for a hot cup, this is your spot. It’s actually located right inside The Alcove (see our next listing).
Housing State Street Coffee patrons and serving up drinks, The Alcove is the self-proclaimed “Cheers” of the neighborhood. They serve up unique, small release wines from family owned wineries and rare beers you won’t find elsewhere in the city. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 3 to 7, so come meet your State Thomas neighbors at The Alcove!
A neighborhood bar and scratch kitchen, Nodding Donkey is situated across the street from State & Allen. Nodding Donkey doubles as a sports bar for the neighborhood with plenty of big screen TVs for game day. On top of that they offer cornhole, big Jenga, and giant Connect 4 on their large, outdoor patio. Whether you’re catching the game, grabbing a meal, or just craving some super-sized outdoor board games, Nodding Donkey has you covered.
